Welcome from Dean Mair

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), the largest and most diverse college at Howard University.

Our program

We enroll the largest number of undergraduate majors in the University and provide the fundamental building blocks for all undergraduate majors.

Courses provide an intellectual foundation for the development of critical thinking, creativity and innovation, artistic expression, problem solving, social responsibility, and the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. With majors in the four divisions—Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences—students have the advantage of expanding their fields of study by participating in high-quality research experiences, study-abroad programs, internships, and fieldwork opportunities designed to prepare them for any career they seek. This rich variety of programs reflects the diversity of society-at-large and enables our graduates to enter the global marketplace prepared with 21st century skills and intellectual capabilities. It is not surprising that the college is referred to as “The Flagship of Howard University.”

Our faculty

Our faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students produce outstanding world-class research that advance the frontiers of knowledge in the sciences and the humanities and plan, develop, and stage award-winning performances and artistic exhibitions.

Their works advance our understanding of fundamental structures and knowledge in the disciplines; lead to breakthroughs with practical effects; deepen our understanding of ourselves, others, and the world in which we live; inspire, encourage, and motivate us to be more socially responsible; and even provide much-needed moments of introspection and relaxation. In addition to outstanding formal classes, this mentoring relationship between faculty and students provides our students with invaluable training and preparation to become leading researchers, policymakers, innovators, artistic creators, and performers.

Our challenge to you

We are excited that you have chosen to explore our educational, research, and artistic opportunities.

We encourage you to be creative, challenge yourself, study hard, and, most of all, learn all you can at The Flagship at Howard University.

Please feel free to explore our website for more information and opportunities, and to contact me at bernard.mair@howard.edu. I look forward to hearing from you.
