2008 "Sisters in Jazz" Collegiate All-Stars

2008 Downbeat Student Music Awards Outstanding Performance Jazz Vocalist Category

The 2008 Sisters in Jazz Collegiate All-Stars, with drummer Sherri Maricle as guest director, are comprised of alto saxophonist Ashley Baker of Florida International University, vocalist Christie Dashiell of Howard University, bassist Judith Goldbach of University of Music and Performing Arts, Mannheim, Germany, pianist Julie Brav of Princeton University, and drummer Shirazette Tinnin of Northern Illinois University. The Sisters in Jazz program was a part of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE), which filed for bankruptcy in April. The Kennedy Center had a partnership with IAJE to present the Sisters in Jazz annually at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. The 2008 group performed at the IAJE annual conference. This quintet was selected by IAJE from a highly competitive international pool of collegiate women applicants, through an annual collegiate competition designed to spotlight the talents of exceptional female jazz musicians. Gregory Carroll is the IAJE Director of Education.
