In addition to administering the accelerated programs leading to the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Dentistry (BS/DDS Program), the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine (BS/MD Program), and the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (BS/DPM Program), the Center for Preprofessional Education organizes programs that enhance the admission of preprofessional students to professional schools (graduate schools, law schools, health professions schools, among others). It also offers workshops featuring learning skills for minority students, filing letters of recommendation, admissions and application procedures, financial planning, the interview process, the preparation of the personal statement, and strategies for coping in "majority" institutions. Douglas J. Haynes Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Douglas J. Haynes Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 by Mrs. Eleanor B. Haynes, Esq. in memory of her late husband "Doug." Mrs. Haynes believed that Howard University was instrumental in shaping the man she married and believed that this scholarship would be a fitting tribute to Doug's legacy. Since Doug came from modest and humble beginnings, he often found himself in need of financial assistance in order to continue his schooling. As Doug never forgot this and spent a great deal of his adult life giving to others; Mrs. Haynes felt deeply that a need-based scholarship at Doug's beloved alma mater would be a fitting tribute to his life. The Douglas J. Haynes Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to any student who needs help. The funds can be used for books, tuition, food, lodging or to satisfy back balances. There is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0. According to Mrs. Haynes, "if the children need the money, give it to them!"
