Study Abroad Opportunities
Studying abroad can be a life-defining experience that expands one’s social and cultural outlook. In light of this, it is important for students to think seriously about the best options.
While the College offers study abroad activities, students are also encouraged to investigate other avenues of study—such as other university programs, approved vendor travel, and the Ralph Bunche Center’s semester abroad program.
Undergraduate and graduate students of Howard University, as well as students from other colleges and universities, are eligible to apply to the College’s Summer Study Abroad Program.
Criteria for acceptance into each study experience are based on the specific program and the discretion of the study abroad professor. However, all programs require students to be in good academic standing.
Regardless of program to which you are applying, all students must fill out the standard COAS Summer Study Abroad Application (PDF), in addition to any program-specific application forms available from the program professor.
For example, if you are applying to Ghana, you must complete the COAS Study Abroad Application (PDF) and the Ghana Study Abroad application.
Information Sessions for Students
At the beginning of each academic year, the College of Arts and Sciences Study Abroad Committee, through the program coordinator in the Dean’s office, organizes an information session for students interested in studying abroad in the following summer and the next academic year.
Information sessions cover the advantages of studying abroad, the risks of studying abroad, the procedure for applying, the cost implications, requirements for transferring credits, destination information, and more.
Travel Funding Sources
To secure University funding for travel, students must be in enrolled good standing and must secure the approval of the University through an academic department.
In addition to using University scholarships or grants to study at an international university or college, COAS offers funding sources to which students may apply:
The Honors Program supports travel for students in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. For more information please contact the program director, Dr. Daniel A. Williams III, firstname.lastname@example.org.
