A College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) education at Howard University unequivocally stands alone. The experience will provide you with daily exposure to world-renowned professors who are frequently sought to offer professional insight and knowledge regarding significant issues. Collectively, they are actively engaged in teaching, publishing their research, and presenting it at local, national, or international professional conferences. Most of them hold terminal degrees, thus demonstrating their commitment to the process of learning and teaching. Immensely respected by their colleagues, not only do our professors contribute to their respective national professional organizations, but often lead them. They proudly serve in local communities, as well as corporate and not-for-profit boards. The relationships cultivated therein are often used to facilitate opportunities for our students to engage in meaningful experiential learning opportunities such as research, internships, study abroad, conference participation, publishing, collaborations, and more. It is that commitment to educating generations of leaders that they whole-heartedly bring to the classroom.
As a prominent, historically Black institution of higher education that has consistently prepared graduates to move boldly throughout the world, our courses are uniquely infused with content designed to broaden students’ knowledge, perspective, and understanding of the African diasporic experience. In addition to academic rigor, the COAS student experience is undeniably shaped by the intellect, energy, enthusiasm, and dedication of our professors and student body. Students are ultimately challenged daily. Yet, the genuine support that they receive from the COAS family throughout their matriculation reminds them that they are home – and never alone.
COAS students build on a proud legacy that comes with expectation - the expectation that inevitably propels the mission to not only succeed, but also to contribute to the greater good by paying the gift of education forward. You are invited to explore our majors and programs to determine if COAS is the home for you. Our students, faculty, and staff extend a hearty welcome to you to join our cadre of talented individuals, who embodies the University’s motto: “Excellence in truth and service.
