The name Ukweli translates to truth in Swahili. Inspired by the Howard University motto: In Truth and Service, Ukweli was born of the mission to provide a platform for HBCU undergraduate students to use research to enhance their academic experience and seek truth and new knowledge in the fields in which they care most about.

About

Founded in 2020, Ukweli: The Howard University Undergraduate Research Journal, is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, supported by the Office of Honors and Scholar Development and the Office of Research. Ukweli is a student-led, faculty supported bi-annual publication that seeks to publish the highest-quality academic writing from Howard University undergraduate students.

Ukweli is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Undergraduate Studies: Center for Honors and Scholar Development, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Submitting to Ukweli

We are now accepting submissions for our Spring/Summer 2022 Issue. Manuscripts will be accepted on a rolling basis, though in order to have your piece considered for publication in our upcoming Issue, please submit by Friday, March 4th. We will continue to accept submissions following this date for our Fall/Winter 2022 Issue.

Submission Eligibility

The first author must be a Howard University undergraduate student or is a Howard alum one year removed from graduation at the time of the Call for Submissions announcement. A submission cannot already be published in another journal, though it may be published elsewhere following the Ukweli submission process. All author(s) must consent to publication if the manuscript is accepted for publication.

Submission Types

The types of submissions considered for review by Ukweli are: 1. Original Research Article: details novel research completed by an undergraduate student and describes the input to a particular field of study; 2. Literature Review analyzes scholarly sources including journal articles, books and their connection to a specific research question. 3. Photo Essay creates a visual narrative through a sequence of photographs. 4. Research Report summarizes information from a previously conducted research project.

The Review Process

1. Your submission will be desk reviewed and checked for plagiarism and other basic requirements as outlined in the Submission Guidelines by the Editors-in-Chief

2. Your manuscript will then undergo the peer-review process by Ukweli Discipline Specific Student Reviewers based on impact, methods, and clarity.

Your work will also be copy edited by undergraduate and graduate copy editors at this stage.

3. Your manuscript will be: Accepted, Declined, Selected for Review and Resubmitted.

4. If accepted, your manuscript will be reviewed by a Faculty Reviewer in the discipline in
which your manuscript is submitted and the Journal’s copyeditor.

Prizes

Authors published in Ukweli will be considered for an award in: 1. Best in Natural Sciences/Engineering 2. Best in Social Sciences/Humanities 3. Best in Communications/Business

Successful authors will also be honored during the Howard University Research Month following
publication release.
